"This one-. celled. organism hunts and eats bacteria as an amoeba, swims around looking for a better environment as a flagellate, and then hunkers down and waits for good times as a cyst," Prochnik said. "It is a very rare process to go ...

How do single-celled organisms maintain homeostasis? Can a human zygote maintain homeostasis?
Q. I'm just wondering how we KNOW that single-celled organisms can respond to stimuli. I mean, how can you tell that an amoeba responds to stimuli? What kind of stimuli? And how could you tell if a human zygote responds to that same sort of stimuli? I dunno, it seems to me that ability to maintain homeostasis is the hardest characteristic of life to prove when it comes to single-celled organisms, like the zygote. Any proof, websites, or studies would be appreciated. Thanks. :]

A. well if they didnt manage they wouldnt survive would they? ;) singlecelled organisms usually have a contractile vacoule which basicaloly gets rid of excess anything lol you can see it in microscopic slides (the vacoule bursting wen full) apart from that, a zygote is in a safe and hormone controlled environment and the placenta helps to regulate its homeostasis. evolution has helped us all u see ;) hope i helped :) have a nice day :)

What would happen to a single-celled organism the size and shape of a 40mm cube?
Q. Wouldn't it be that the cell would not survive since the nutrients would not reach the areas it needs to reach since the surface area is so large?

A. The cell would not survive as well as a compartmentalized one. Your right on the ball with the surface area concept, except you have to think about the inside of the cell as well. Almost all interactions in the cell (including organelles in the eukaryotes) occur on the membrane (plasma membrane, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi) structure. So, an efficient cell would have lots of surface area in order to be productive. However, greater volume will not be beneficial because there's more in the cell that needs supply but less to supply it. The Surface Area-to-Volume ratio should always favor the Surface Area more by splitting the cube into little cubes that add up to the same volume of the large, single 40mm cube. If you want to go deeper… [cont.]

Is Staphylococcus aureus considered a multicellular organism or a single celled organism?
Q. I wanted to know if it is considered multicellular since it lives in clusters of other cells. I also wanted to know what intracellular structures impact the function of the cell. Also, does the cell undergo differentiation? Thank you for any help!

A. single celled. it can differentiate from planktonic (normal, free floating cells) into biofilms which are adherent multi-cellular structured communities that attach to various surfaces. edit: added a source, reworded the development statement to make it more clear.
