Life expectancy?
Q. Here is a paragraph, Life expectancy is the average age at death of the entire live-born population. In the middle of the nineteenth century, life expectancy in North America was 40 years, whereas now it is nearly 80 years. Thus, in those days, people must have been considered old at an age that we now consider the prime of life. whats the meaning of "the entire live-born population" ? whats the meaning of "the prime of life."

A. 'The entire live-born population' means those who were not stillborn, died at birth or near birth. 'The prime of life' is somewhere inbetween teenager and middle-aged, about 30-40 years old. I hope this helps.

A. Well It is with great pleasure that in September of this year I will celebrate my 19th year cured from acute biphenotypic leukemia, meaning i had both acute myelogenous and acute lymphocytic leukemias combined. This was all due to an unrelated bone marrow transplant. In 1990 when I had my transplant my chances of survivng were less than 7 percent. I know things have improved enormously since then but I dont believe that medicine alone can determine ones chances of survivng. One really must believe that the possibilty of surviving exists and keep focused. I know there were people in the hospital at the same time as I was who had alot greater "chances" than I did that didnt survive because the thought of cancer was almost like a death… [cont.]

What is the life expectancy of a petite cocker spaniel?
Q. My cocker is 13 years old and seems to be in fine shape. I am not OVERLY familiar with the breed as she was rescued at the age of 5. Any help on life expectancy and what to expect would be greatly appreciated. Serious answers only and please no jokes about impending doom, my wife will be reading this and it will get her really upset. Thanks for understanding. I greatly appreciate the input. We take great care of her as she is one of four that have been our personal rescues. I have never dealt with an older dog as all of the 40+ rescues my wife and I have done have mostly been 5 and under. I will definitely take the advice here. I am sure you guys will be hearing from me again.

A. Small dogs, like Cockers, tend to live longer than larger breeds. Given proper care, and assuming there are no life-threatening conditions that you aren't aware of, don't be surprised if she has another 4 or 5 good years in her, and maybe more! And, my best vibes go out to you for rescuing a dog who, at the age of five, would have been passed over by most people. She has a very good home with you, indeed! And I'll bet she loves you just as much as you love her!

What is the life expectancy of my children born in 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2008? Will they have a chance to live longer than previous generations of past if nothing happens to them?

A. Yes, although the bulk of the increase reflects lower infant mortality, rather than life extension. Still, as we learn more about cancer and ailments of the circulatory system, we are likely to see more and more people living to truly advanced years.

May I know life expectancy for those who went through coronary artery bypass surgery?
Q. Providing that they make conscious efforts to maintain healthy life. Using vein for this surgery affect the patient's life expectancy?
Asked by Pretty Sakura - Thu Jun 26 00:55:10 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Typically, the saphenous vein from the leg and the left internal mammary artery (LIMA) are used for the bypass. Veins used either have their valves removed or are turned around so that the valves in them do not occlude blood flow in the graft. LIMA grafts are longer-lasting than vein grafts, both because the artery is more robust than a vein and because, being already connected to the aorta, the LIMA need only be grafted at one end. For this reason, the LIMA is usually grafted to the left anterior descending artery (LAD), which supplies the left ventricle, the part of the heart that pumps oxygenated blood around the body. Alternatively, an artery such as the radial artery from the arm, may be used in place of a vein. This is believed to… [cont.]

Does anyone know the life expectancy of someone who was diagnosed with tachycardia?
Q. My boyfriend was diagnosed with tachycardia when he was younger and went through 2 heart surgeries. The doctors told himi he only had until he was 32. I was wondering if that was still true since he's had the surgeries. He's in his 20s now and refuses to see the doctor. He had a hard time dealing with the short life issue and is afraid that it might be worse or the same. He can't handle hearing it again. We plan to get married, and I fear for him. I want him to get checked out, but I can't convince him. Can anyone please tell me what the average life expectancy is for tachycardia, so I could maybe put both of our minds to rest?

A. Tachycardia is not a condition, but a group of conditions which cause a rapid heart beat. They vary from benign [not harmful] to life-threatening. There is not enough information in your description to say anything specific about your boyfriend's condition. In addition, treatment for certain tachycardias has changed greatly since your bf was a child. He should get his childhood records and sit down with a cardiologist to determine if there is any reason for concern.

What is it with cancers and life expectancy?
Q. Every mag i usually read, it says lots of medical problems everyday, such as Vitamin supplements can reduce your life expectancy, drinking fluoride water may cause bone cancer in boys, hair dyes are likely to cause Leukemia (ALL) and people who live near nuclear chemical factories are at risk of developing non-hodkins lymphoma and leukemia. This has to be true, it was all over the news? Is that why we got to try and stop polluting the air and clean out the water pipes to reduce the risks? It's just crazy! Whats your opinion on this?

A. Please do not assume that because something is said in a newspaper or magazine that it is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. You sound most confused about this matter and it is not the sort of matter to worry about without knowing the facts which are known and the 'facts' which are not proven and/or are just rumours. The best answers can invariably be found at your doctor's surgery because if he/she does not know he/she can refer you to someone who is experienced in such matters and give good guidance as to where truth lies. I know that not all doctors know all the answers. Not all the answers are available - hence all the research. Life expectancy, males 1950 - 66.5 years Life expectancy, females 1950 - 70 years Australians are now the second-longest-living people on earth with falling death rates for cancer, heart disease, stroke and injury, but the indigenous population continues to die earlier. What is the life expectancy of a dog diagnosed with Cushing's disease?
Q. My 7 year old terrier has recently had blood work done which indicates the possible existance of Cushing's disease. He had elevated ALP of 146 last year and this year it is 176. His thyroid is low at 0.49. The vet thinks he might be pre-cushings, hence the only slightly elevated alp levels. He shows no other symptoms of the disease, no excessive drinking or eating, no incontinence or frequent urination. He is active and playful and has no intolerance to heat. My question is how might the presence of cushing's disease effect his life expectancy?

A. Cushing's disease, also known as hyperadrenocorticism Left untreated, Cushing's disease will progress and can lead to life-threatening disorders such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, and liver and kidney failure, and to chronic maladies such as hypothyroidism and infections of the skin, ears, gums, eyes, or bladder. Cushing's disease cannot be cured, but the treatments available can prolong your pet's quality of life and keep him around for years longer. If an adrenal tumor is causing the disease, surgery may be indicated. Either way, it's better to get started on treatment. A. Hi Charles, The jury is still out on the life expectancy of DVDs. A lot depends on storage. They need to be dry and not too hot. The question of life is largely centered about DVDs that are burned like you do on your computer. It is generally agreed they will not last as long as commercially pressed. We may not know for sure for many years but the consensus is that a burned DVD properly stored will last 20 years or more. Norm
